Special Edition: Fantasy Trick or Treats

There has been some tricks and treats among players early in the season. Some players are giving their fantasy owners nightmares while others are providing pleasant surprises. Considering today is Halloween and the end of the first month of the season, I thought it would be the perfect time to shine some light on he early tricks and treats of the season.

Tricks

Roberto Luongo- Vancouver Canucks
Though Luongo has a history of bad starts, it is different this year as now he has a strong back up in Cory Schneider who can easily step in and replace Luo. Many fantasy owners were expecting numbers similar to last season where he was nominated for the Vezina and while that is still possible, his 3-3-1 record still makes owners nervous.

Jeff Carter- Columbus Blue Jackets
The Blue Jackets are off to a terrible start and the injury to Jeff Carter does not help matters at all. When Carter was traded for him, it was expected that with star winger Rick Nash, the two players would pile up points. Not the case so far. In 5 games Carter has no goals and 3 assists, way lower numbers than people want to see.

PK Subban- Montreal Canadians
Subban has seen his role greatly expanded with the injuries to Andrei Markov and Chris Campoli, and he unfortunately has not been a factor yet this year. Subban has only 3 assists in 11 games along with a rating of -3 which are poor fantasy numbers for a player who has proven he is capable of so much more.

Treats

Nikolai Khabibulin- Edmonton Oilers
The 35 year old Khabibulin has been reborn this season with spectacular number. The Oilers sit atop the Western Conference largely due to his 5-0-2 record and amazing 1.12 GAA. What a treat he has been so far.

Phil Kessel- Toronto Maple Leafs
Kessel leads the league with 10 goals and 18 points and has been a factor in the Leafs quick start. Though he is a treat know, he does have a history of cold streaks. Until that happens though, ride his scoring to the top of your fantasy standings.

Sheldon Souray- Dallas Stars
Souray was all but forgotten after many injuries and a demotion to the AHL. But once he was bought out by the Edmonton Oilers, Souray regained his scoring touch and now has 3 goals and 5 assists in 11 games. Not bad for a guy most people had written off years ago.
